We’ll discuss I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak. Talk about no aspirations... 19-year old cab driver, Ed Kennedy, lives an everyday existence--that is, until he's involved in a bank robbery. His world changes dramatically after that afternoon in the bank--not always for the better. Readers will learn that every move Ed makes can have a positive or a negative effect on his life. Through a series of mysterious events, the reader is exposed to Zusak's cleverly derived characters that in the ordinary become extraordinary. You'll enjoy this 2006 Printz Honor Award winner. Pick up a copy at the 2nd floor Information Desk.

We will be taking a break in December for the holidays. Our next discussion will be in January.

This he said/she said romance told by YA stars Rachel Cohn and David Levithan is a sexy, funny roller coaster of a story about one date over one very long night, with two teenagers, both recovering from broken hearts, who are just trying to figure out who they want to be--and where the next great band is playing. Told in alternating chapters, teeming with music references, humor, angst, and endearing side characters, this is a love story you'll wish were your very own. Join York High School alumni David (Class of 2006) and Matthew (Class of 2004) Montgomery as they tell us about their bike trip from Elmhurst to Seattle, Washington, in the summer of 2006. Their accommodations were old school—a tent and sleeping bags -- but their documenting of the trip was strictly 21st century--blogging as they traveled.

Take part in a workshop at the Elmhurst Art Museum which explores how nature can be used to inspire and create art. Learn how to use natural products to make your own paper. Also, create an interesting collage using the natural resources around the Museum. This workshop will give you the opportunity to learn how professional artists have used nature in their work and see what your peers are creating with what nature has given them! Co-sponsored with the Elmhurst Art Museum.
Maximum: 20 teens.

Plastic

We had one response to our EcoChallenge No. 1 on plastic. Two hours was the longest this person went without buying something made of plastic or something packaged in plastic. It's hard--it seems like if something isn't made of plastic, there's plastic in the packaging.

Did you hear about the high school student in Canada who has isolated microorganisms that make plastic bags degrade in about 3 months? Read the article.
